Social media is a fantastic way for small businesses (SMEs) to increase their visibility, interact with customers and strengthen their brand. But what does it take to be successful on social media even with a small budget? And how can we support you? Find out here!

The essentials for a successful social media presence:

The strategy

Set yourself clear goals

Think about what you want to achieve with your social media presence. Do you want to make your brand better known, attract more customers or improve customer service? Clear goals help you to use existing resources efficiently. This also applies to choosing the right channel: where is your target group active? On Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok, LinkedIn or X? Only use the social media channel that is most relevant to you (for the time being) - but the right one!

Tip: Start small. Set yourself one or two main goals and focus on them. The clearer your goals are, the easier it is to measure success and adjust your strategy. And remember: one well-maintained channel is worth more than several half-heartedly used platforms. Don't have a social media strategy yet? Use our checklist “Fit for social media: 10 steps to the right strategy” with the most important questions you should clarify before your social media launch.

The planning

Post regularly

Regular posts are the be-all and end-all of a successful social media presence. It doesn't matter whether you post daily, weekly or monthly - the main thing is that you remain consistent! This helps to create a certain background noise on your channels. One post per week is a good start. Always plan your posts a month in advance. This not only ensures regularity, but also that you keep thinking about varied content.

Tip: Create a small editorial plan. Make a note of topics and ideas for your posts in advance to avoid stress and always be well prepared.

The contents

Versatile and efficient

Be creative! High-quality content is the key to attracting the attention of your target group. Use images, videos and infographics to make your messages visually appealing. Remember that content that inspires, informs or entertains your followers is best received.

Tip: Recycle content such as blog posts or newsletters by preparing them for social media. Repost successful posts to maximize your reach. You can also leave out text on images and videos from time to time - then you can easily use the material for posts in different languages and reach a larger audience. Make the most of your existing resources!

The Tools

Meta Business Manager, Canva & Co.

Even with a limited budget, you can achieve a lot on social media. Use free tools such as Canva to create graphics or the free version of Buffer to plan your posts. These tools are intuitive and offer numerous templates to help you create professional content.

You have two tools to choose from for managing your Instagram and Facebook account: The Meta Business Manager and the Meta Business Suite. The Meta Business Suite offers simple management of posts and ads. However, we recommend using the Meta Business Manager. It offers better control and more security over your social media activities. This protects you from unpleasant surprises, such as hacked accounts. In the Business Manager, you can also assign individual rights to different employees without having to pass on a password.

Tip: Invest in a training course or crash course for the Meta Business Tools or have them set up by a professional right away. This will help you get the most out of your social media activities.
