Pinterest: The sustainable SEO booster

Published 20.07.2020 by Marina Cantafio

Use Pinterest for better search engine results.

Pinterest is underestimated as a social platform - it can bring in a lot of traffic, is easy to maintain, and the content remains visible for a long time. Last but not least: it is a great tool for search engine optimisation.

More and more people are flocking to Pinterest - for inspiration, or maybe just to dream a little. Almost 335 million people visit Pinterest each month, and nearly one million of those visitors come from Switzerland. This is reason enough for us to use this platform to show our customers off in the best light.

Pinterest is a highly visual platform and for some of our clients such as our client Ticinella - a sausage product artisan from the Ticino - this means we can show our clients off in the best light Ticinella has a highly appealing visual language produced in the best quality including a variety of recipes based on their aromatic ham and salami products on their website. This makes Pinterest is an excellent alternative platform to Facebook and Instagram, and because recipes are a popular category. We drew on this content to quickly populate their new Pinterest account for Ticinella without much effort.

We lead Pinterest users to the Ticinella website using high-quality inspiration, as each pin links to the corresponding recipe in the cookbook. Pinterest also offers the opportunity to showcase the company’s human side to potential customers. Pictures showing the craftsmanship of the Salumieri or Ticino as a destination complement the company's pinboards. We saw almost 9,000 monthly visitors on Ticinella's pinboard within a few short months.

Use Pinterest for better search engine results.

Pinterest also has a major influence on search engine optimization: Regular pinning generates backlinks, which have a positive effect on the search engine ranking of the website. Recipes provide welcome clicks on your website as they never go out of date! Google also displays Pinterest content high up in search engine results, which generates additional traffic.

Longevity without daily maintenance

The life cycle of Pinterest posts is also significantly longer than in the other social networks. Pins often continue to generate traffic for months after they are published, which differs from posts on other social media platforms, which generate traffic mainly in the first few days or only while posts are being boosted. As such, engagement and retention rates are high over a longer period of time.

Pinterest offers an exciting long-term and low maintenance option for companies that have inspiring, practical or beautiful content at their disposal. Maintaining a Pinterest board is easy in comparison to other platforms because typical interaction with followers is significantly lower: most users pin content on their own boards without commenting.

Ivan Trezzini, communications manager at Ticinella, adds: “We were positively surprised by the performance of Pinterest. We are very grateful to Marina and the team at Die Schwedin. for the recommendation. Thanks to Pinterest, we are now reaching an exciting new group of users with little effort. We have found a niche who enjoys looking at our content and puts it to good use in their own kitchens. We find this conversion rate especially interesting!"

Pinterest Best Practices by other brands

How are other brands successfully using Pinterest? IKEA, Nivea and spray paint manufacturer Krylon stand out right away.

Ikea's campaign “Bring more home into your life” focused on customers’ bedrooms. IKEA asked their audience to browse Pinterest for inspiration and ideas for a new look for their bedroom. The participants collected their inspirations on a special pinboard. Swiss bloggers helped to get the campaign up and running and got busy pinning! IKEA rewarded participants by giving away gift cards, so the winners could make their interior design projects reality.

Nivea attracts leads not just in the body care and wellness world, with tips and inspiration for skincare, home deco, relaxation and more, but also with different ideas about the colour “blue”, like on the pinboard “Blue Style”. (Barbara Schwede was in charge of introducing Pinterest at Nivea.) Why does the Hamburg-based company deal with fashion in the colour blue? Because fashion is one of the most searched keywords on Pinterest. Style suggestions in the colours of the brand — blue and white — are picked up by users and present the brand in this adjacent topic area. This creative action garnered a lot of attention from Pinterest users — almost 14,000 users follow this board now.

Krylon implemented another excellent campaign: They encouraged users to upcycle old junk into an attractive, modern object with paint. They combined this campaign with a funny TV ad and an in-person event — the Krylon team created the world's longest flea market.

1 "Wie lange lebt Social Media Content?” The study https://www.textbroker.de/wie-lange-lebt-mein-content came to the following conclusion: The half-life of a tweet was 18 minutes, for a Facebook post it was 4 hours and for Pinterest - ta-dah! - 4 months.
